The Problem
with Social Networking Demographics:
As a retailer, manufacturer, or distributor, you want your products
in front of the people who are most likely to buy them. So, what demographics
are likely to get you the most sales for your cigars and cigar accessories?
The rage over the
past several years has been the trend in "social networking." Sites
like MySpace, FaceBook, and YouTube (for videophiles), have driven
tremendous traffic across the Web. According to the most recent reports,
the typical social network demographic is relatively young, with a
moderate education level and few who make any serious income (see Chart
1.).
This trend has also
affected the cigar industry as numerous cigar forums and blogs can
be seen to dot the landscape. Typical cigar bloggers and "network
junkies"
flock to cigar forums, and other places where they chime in by chatting,
leaving comments, and generally having a great time interacting with
each other. Unfortunately, this demographic does a lot more talking
about cigars, than actually buying them.
The Stogie
Fresh Demographics:
Stogie Fresh demographics
have proven to be an older and more highly educated group. And, more
importantly for sales, a much wealthier group (see Chart 2.). Further,
48% of the Stogie Fresh demographic has spent more than $800 on the
web in the past 12 months. That makes them a perfect market for click-throughs
to web retail sites.
And what about the
rest of the Stogie Fresh website? All of the Stogie Fresh web-based
publications are aimed at the more educated and older consumer base.
This is the demographic that has the wherewithall to make significant
purchases. While a lot of traffic is generated to cigar blogging sites
and forums, this traffic is not easily leveraged into significant sales
because of a low household income. Over the past three months, the
Stogie Fresh website has averaged nearly 1,000 visits per day, and
about 27,000 visits per month. And, we are continually growing.
